The Collie River twists and tumbles its way from east of town to Wellington Dam and onto the coast, with some spectacular picnic and recreation sites along its length. Minninup Pool and Long Pool are calm stretches of the river, great for canoeing or swimming. Other sites include the Rapids, Big Rock and Little Rock, all wonderful places to enjoy the Collie River, deep in the forested valleys of the Wellington National Park. Water skiers can enjoy Stockton Lake only seven kilometres east of the town.
For the thrill seekers, abseiling is possible at the Quarry picnic site at Wellington Dam. Contact the Visitor Centre or Department of Environment & Conservation office for more details.
Immerse yourself in Collie’s fascinating history. A visit to the Old Collie Goods Sheds, Coalfields Museum, Railway Station or Tourist Coalmine all celebrate the importance of Collie to the prosperity of Western Australia through timber milling, railways and coal production for electricity. Many of the town’s fine historic buildings reflect this prosperous era.
Families will enjoy a visit to Soldiers Park in the town centre. Bright and colourful playground equipment will keep the kids happy, while Mum and Dad can relax on the lawns under the shady Peppermint trees. Save some bread from your picnic lunch or barbeque to feed the ducks. Soldiers’ Park is bordered by the Collie River and features a walkway from the historic Co-op Bridge to the East End Bridge, and return. This 2km loop is ideal for walking, cycling or pushing the pram.
The long distance Munda Biddi cycle trail beginning in the hills east of Perth winds its way through forests and valleys to Collie. The trail uses a network of bush tracks, firebreaks and disused railway formations. Cyclists can enjoy a peaceful morning ride or challenge themselves to a longer forest adventure. Huts situated about a days ride apart, offer basic camping facilities, with sleeping shelters, tent sites and toilets. The Collie to Darkan rail trail, stretching for 46 kilometres east of Collie through to Darkan, offers another challenge to riders looking to explore the region further.
The world famous long distance walking trail, the Bibbulmun Track also traverses the Collie Shire on its way from Perth to Albany. Hikers’ shelters are located approximately 20km apart and are situated in beautiful locations. Wake up to the sounds of birds in the early morning and feel at peace in this outstanding natural environment. Ask the Visitor Centre about short day walks or Bibbulmun Walking Breaks where local accommodation operators arrange pickups along the track, and at the end of the day you can relax in comfort, enjoying a well earned glass of local wine or lager from the nearby brewery.
